About RD Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo was called Zaire from 1971 to 1997 and is located in Central Africa. In area, it is the second largest state in Africa after Algeria. The history of the Congo is characterized by a cruel Belgian colonial regime from 1885 to 1960 and a subsequent dictatorship that, after a change of power, led to civil war until well into the 2000s.
Our Work
Cervical cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most women living here are unaware of the risks of this disease and know neither their treatment options nor the measures they can take to prevent it in good time. With the help of the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, we want to reduce the mortality rate of poor women in Kinshasa by preventing cervical cancer through the introduction of a sustainable visual screening programme that is appropriate to local resources.
Major Challenges
Due to decades of war, exploitation and corruption, the Congo today is one of the poorest countries in the world, despite its wealth of raw materials. Poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition continue to be severe, depending on the province. There is hardly any public health care system.
