About RD Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo was called Zaire from 1971 to 1997 and is located in Central Africa. In area, it is the second largest state in Africa after Algeria. The history of the Congo is characterized by a cruel Belgian colonial regime from 1885 to 1960 and a subsequent dictatorship that, after a change of power, led to civil war until well into the 2000s.

Our Work

46% of the population was under 15 years old in 2019, which can be a great opportunity for the country. Together with the local partner ‘Childrens Voice’, the RDS offers young women psychological and health care as well as literacy courses and programs on job prospects and small business. The aim is to make it easier for young people to set up their own micro-businesses.

Major Challenges

Due to decades of war, exploitation and corruption, the Congo today is one of the poorest countries in the world, despite its wealth of raw materials. Poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition continue to be severe, depending on the province. There is hardly any public health care system.
