Project objective

Women and young people in need from the municipalities of San Raymundo, San Lucas Sacatepéquez and Palencia have limited access to qualified vocational training due to their financial circumstances and educational situation. Our goal is to improve their income opportunities and health care by providing high-quality training in the technical, entrepreneurial and health care sectors.

Training centres in poor municipalities

360 people from these municipalities (over 85% women) will be able to complete an intensive course in the use of flatbed sewing machines and overlock machines, as well as a tailoring and sewing course focusing on haute couture garments. These courses are recognised by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education. In addition, express courses in floristry, hairdressing and manicuring will enable them to quickly enter the job market. Alongside their training, the participants will learn the basics of entrepreneurship and will be supported in order to start their own business after completing their training.

Nursing Assistant School and health promotion

There are 9.6 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants in Guatemala. The Monseñor-Arnold-Poll nursing assistant school in Guatemala City, which belongs to Caritas Arquidiocesana and trains 30 people a year, is therefore being equipped with anatomical models for the various fields of medicine (general medicine, surgery, paediatrics and gynaecology). Training for the teaching staff will also help to improve the quality of the training. To this end, 50 female health promoters will be trained to act as contact persons for health issues in their communities and to provide information on nutrition, hygiene and the prevention of diseases.

Our local partner on the ground

Cáritas Arquidiocesana was founded in 1978 with the aim of promoting the development of urban and rural areas in the archdiocese (Departments of Guatemala and Sacatepéquez) and contributing to progress. Its work is geared towards improving the living conditions of population groups affected by poverty.
