Project goal

The standard of teaching at public preschools and primary schools in rural areas in Guatemala is very low. This is largely due to the few opportunities for further training for teachers and the lack of school management skills among school administrators. The aim of the project is to sustainably improve the quality of education at 30 schools in Suchitepéquez municipality by improving the skills of teachers and school administrators, thereby giving children a good start at school.

Strengthening the quality of teaching

In the project, a total of 480 teachers at 30 preschools and primary schools are being trained in pedagogical and technical skills. In addition, all school management teams are supported through training to improve their school management and develop a vision for their schools.
Parents are also involved in the project as an important pillar in the children’s education process. They attend workshops on topics such as early intervention, the importance of education and how they can support their children at school at home.

Improvement of the sanitary infrastructure

The sanitary facilities are being adapted to the needs of the children (smaller toilets; lower washbasins). In order to improve the standard of hygiene not only in the school but also in the families, a total of 1,500 children, 60 teachers and 750 parents will attend hygiene and health workshops.

Our local partner

FUNDAP has been working in western Guatemala since 1981 with the aim of combating poverty and inequality in Guatemala and has been promoting the quality of education in public schools for children aged 7 to 12 in rural areas in south-west Guatemala since 2005. In 2011, work was started in the pre-school sector (children aged 4 to 6).
